Philosophical ethics has opened its purview beyond human action to animal ethics and environmental ethics, but has not yet found a way to expand its existing reflections to designed objects, particularly built ones. Perhaps in parallel to ethics, contemporary aesthetics discusses the moral repercussions of art works with clear representational content – socially critical novels, figurative paintings – but has not paid closer attention to architecture. Is the lack of attention in aesthetics due to architecture’s representational content being elusive, or because architecture’s aesthetic appraisal is taken to proceed autonomously from moral considerations? How would architecture be considered otherwise?
The 2014 conference of the International Society for the Philosophy of Architecture invites papers which probe these questions, or re-draw the assumptions behind them. It welcomes architects and philosophers willing to scrutinize extant (inter)disciplinary boundaries and consensus on these questions. The conference celebrates attempts to operate at the intersection of both disciplines, and promotes work ready to give philosophical ethics and concrete architecture)s serious consideration alike.
The conference is organised by the International Society for the Philosophy of Architecture (ISPA). Keynotes include renowned aestheticist philosophers, Noel Carroll and Nick Zangwill.

The Society for the Philosophic Study of the Contemporary Visual Arts (SPSCVA) invites papers to be presented at its divisional meeting held in conjunction with the Eastern divisional meeting of the American Philosophical Association. Papers may address any topic that involves the connection between philosophy and the visual arts: film, photography, video, or other aesthetic media. Presentations should be 20-25 minutes (10-12 pages in length; 2500-3000 words). Presenters must be currently paid members of the SPSCVA. (You do not need to be a member of the SPSCVA to submit a paper for consideration.) The RMA Music and Philosophy Study Group warmly invites paper submissions for its two-day international conference, to be held in London on 27-28 June 2014. The event, the fourth of an annual series of conferences run by the Study Group, will offer an opportunity for those with an interest in music and philosophy to share and discuss work, in the hope of furthering dialogue in this area. Departing from the practice in previous years, there will not be a conference theme in 2014, in order to allow engagement with the widest possible range of interests. As such, paper submissions on all topics relating to the area of music and philosophy are welcome. Collaboration between persons from different disciplines (including music studies, philosophy, performance, composition, psychology, history, literary studies, art history, anthropology, and others) would be especially welcomed.

Proposals are invited for:

• Individual papers (20 minutes) – up to 350 words
• Collaborative papers (up to 30 minutes) – up to 500 words
• Themed paper sessions of three or four individual (20 minute) papers – up to 350 words per paper plus 350 words outlining the rationale for the session.
• Lecture recitals of 30 minutes – up to 350 words

Past grants have been used to support conferences and lecture series. Applicants must be members of the Society.

Where the event applied for is abroad, it must be demonstrated that the event is in the interests of British Aesthetics.

Applications should include a specific description of the project and a pre-costing which estimates how the funds would be used.  There is an upper limit of £5,000 for small grants awards.  The Society does not normally make grants to projects of benefit to only one or a few individuals.
