Congratulations to our 2026 winners: James Rowley (University of Liverpool), for his paper, ‘Digital Sampling: Towards a Hip-Hop Ontology’, and Yili Zhou (Duke Kunshan University) for her paper, ‘Morality and Music: A Brief Discussion on How Moral Self-Cultivation Contributes to Music Performance’.

James and Yili both receive a £500 prize and a grant of up to £1000 to attend the conference in September. They will be encouraged to review their papers for submission to the British Journal of Aesthetics.

A.W. Eaton is Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago. She received her PhD in both philosophy and art history from The University of Chicago. She has published on topics such as the relationship between aesthetic and ethical value, pornography, erotic art, fatness, feminist aesthetics, aesthetics and race, and artistic representations of rape. She is currently developing a pragmatic account of pictures and working on various topics related to aesthetic injustice. Professor Eaton has been a Laurence Rockefeller Fellow at Princeton’s Center for Human Values; Senior Research Fellow at Lichtenberg Kolleg, University of Göttingen; and the Brady Distinguished Visiting Associate Professor at Northwestern University.

While Oxford University Press has given the Society the option of organising their own production and distribution for print copies, the cost for this would be significant, and the majority of our members only read the Journal digitally. Therefore, the Society has made the decision to move the Journal to online-only publishing and will no longer accept orders for printed copies after 30 December 2025.

This will not affect any current subscriptions. Members who have purchased print copies due to be shipped in 2026 (Volume 66, Issues 1-4) will receive their publications as normal. Anyone with membership due to expire before the end of the year will also be able to buy these copies until 30 December 2025 when renewing their membership.

New members can purchase the final printed issues of the Journal, to be shipped in 2026, until 30 December 2025 on this page of our website: /product/bsa-membership/

We understand some members may be disappointed by this news. However, the Society is committed to reducing our carbon footprint, and we hope our readers can appreciate the environmental benefits of this decision.

DUTIES OF POST

WEBSITE
The Editor will be responsible for editing and maintaining website content, making sure all pages are relevant, accurate, up-to-date, appropriate for the target audience, and easily accessible to users. This will include updating pages to include new events, relevant activities, journals, and other updates.

The Editor must be able to respond promptly to requests from the ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ Managers and Trustees Committee members to create new content and update existing pages. The post-holder will liaise with the wider aesthetics community wishing to advertise calls for papers, journals and events, proof-reading and editing any adverts so that they are consistent with the style of the website.

NEWSLETTER
The Editor will curate a bi-monthly digital newsletter, featuring news from the website, new Journal articles, and announcements of the Society’s activities and events. The post-holder will proof-read and edit items accordingly for a consistent style, and ensure the format can be easily read on all devices.

SOCIAL MEDIA
The Editor will maintain an active social media presence for the ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ via its Facebook page and Bluesky feed. The Society will also be launching Instagram and LinkedIn accounts soon, which the Editor will co-ordinate.

As well as adding excerpts or creating edited versions of ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ news items, the Editor will signpost relevant items of interest to the wider aesthetics community, and respond to any comments or queries.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

The post reports to the ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ Managers and receives technical guidance from the Website Manager. The post will be paid at £16 per hour for up to 100 hours per annum, as required. The appointment is for one year in the first instance, renewable subject to satisfactory performance.

The Editor must take sensible precautions to ensure the safety of our members’ data and our social media accounts, including but not limited to: not sharing any data, not storing data on a shared or public device, and having strong passwords on any devices used to carry out the role.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Applicants will be expected to be UK-based postgraduates working in aesthetics. No equipment is required other than internet access to carry out the role from home or university. The ideal candidate will have:

• an understanding of how to edit and maintain websites, including use of WordPress themes
• experience of copywriting, editing and proof-reading
• excellent attention to detail
• an understanding of best practice for the web (usability, access, SEO)
• an appreciation of style of the website
• good communication skills
• experience of maintaining an active Facebook account, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Bluesky feed

Knowledge of GDPR, Mailchimp, and generating graphic images for social media would be advantageous.

Professor Smith is Professor of Philosophy, Art, and Film, and Director of the Aesthetics Research Centre at University of Kent. He was a Leverhulme Research Fellow (2005-6), a Laurence E. Rockefeller Fellow at Princeton University’s Centre for Human Values (2017-18), and President of the Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image (2014-7). He is a member of the editorial boards of the British Journal of Aesthetics, Series, and Cinema: Journal of Philosophy and the Moving Image. He works primarily in film theory broadly, but especially the ‘philosophy of film’ – film theory informed by analytic philosophy – and classical film theory; cognitive and evolutionary approaches to cinema, and to art in general; empirical and experimental approaches to the arts.
