The SocietĂ  Italiana di Estetica (Italian Society of Aesthetics) is pleased to announce the 2nd edition of the Summer School, titled “L’estetica e le arti: traiettorie e percorsi”, which will take place at the ancient Conservatorio delle Orfane, in Terra Murata (Island of Procida), branch of the University of Naples “L’Orientale”.

The Summer School will be focused on some central issues of philosophical aesthetics, re-thought according to the theoretical and urging cultural tendencies of the present time and revolved around the current debates about contemporary art, image-theories, the public profile and design of the aesthetic, the new forms of perceiving and sharing of aesthetic or artistic contents.

Both didactic modules, frontal lessons and ‘conversations with artists’, will be held in Italian – the discussion can be held in Italian, English and French. The Summer School is addressed to graduate master, PhD students, as well as Postdocs and Researchers, working in the field of aesthetics.

Summer School Director: Maddalena Mazzocut-Mis (University of Milan)

With its interdisciplinary and international expertise, the Department
of Cultural Heritage and Environment at the University of Milan
(http://eng.bac.unimi.it/ecm/home/department) is a centre of
excellence for research in aesthetics and its connection with the
scenic arts and the study of expressive movement and the body.

The members of the project team are currently involved in two European
Union research projects, whose Principal Investigator is Prof.
Maddalena Mazzocut-Mis: /Senses – The sensory theatre – New
transnational strategies for theatre audience building/

construction). Partner of the University of Milan for the Summer
School is /Centro Teatro Attivo/ (http://www.centroteatroattivo.it/),
a major international centre for training and research in theatre.

The summer school aims to provide an introduction to dramatic writing
to students enrolled in any arts, humanities or scientific
undergraduate programme. Stimulated by the contributions of scholars
in aesthetics and theatre, as well as of artists and experts of
sensory analysis, participants will be asked to use dramatic writing
to address the dissolution between the real and the virtual, and the
possibility for the senses to generate evidence and to be a vehicle
for different types of knowledge.

Participants will attend a series of lectures on aesthetics and the
philosophy of the senses, and take advantage of guided visits to
historical sites and contemporary venues, museums and theatres in
Milan. These activities will provide participants with the theoretical
tools and the creative inputs enabling them to reflect on the role of
the five senses in real and virtual artistic and dramatic experiences.
On this theme, they will work in groups with the final aim of
producing a short drama.

The School will comprise a total of *40 hours* (25 hours of classroom
activities and 15 hours of autonomous work). *All activities will be
conducted in English*.

PhD students and Postdocs from the disciplines of philosophy, literary studies, and psychology/neurosciences are invited to submit applications to participate in the interdisciplinary Spring School “The Role of Empathy and Emotion in Understanding Fiction” to be held at Göttingen University, 27-31 March 2017.

The aim of this Spring School is to investigate the relationship between understanding and responding affectively to fictions from the perspectives of philosophy, literary studies, and psychology: do emotions and empathy play a decisive role in understanding fiction, and if so, how? Tackling this question poses challenges that are both theoretical and practical in nature. For example, there exist several competing theories in cognitive psychology and philosophy that conceptualize emotions and their affective and cognitive components differently, and these theories make different claims as to their empirical validity. Within literary studies it is customary to distinguish different levels of a literary work that may present themselves as objects of either empathy or the emotions, and there are different theoretical and methodological approaches to interpreting fictions accordingly. Any investigation of the role of empathy and the emotions in understanding fictions therefore has to combine theoretical and methodological know-how on both text analysis and reader responses.

As philosophers, literary scholars and psychologists will take part in this Spring School, it will provide an opportunity for both empirically and theoretically oriented researchers to discuss how emotions and empathy can be said to play a decisive role in literary comprehension.

Confirmed keynote speakers are, Melanie Green (The State University of New York), Suzanne Keen (Washington and Lee University), Jenefer Robinson (University of Cincinnati), Gregory Currie (University of York), Derek Matravers (The Open University) and Arthur Jacobs (TU Berlin).

Participants will also have the opportunity to present their own work. A

words) that demonstrates your interest in the topic of the Spring

to present and discuss their own work are asked to include a short
abstract of their presentation.

CJMC: Center for the Study of Jewish Thought in Jewish Culture, University of Copenhagen

Abstract:

This interdisciplinary conference, workshop and PhD course is dedicated to an analysis of interviews with Holocaust survivors. An exemplary recording from the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University will be discussed from multiple perspectives, including psychoanalysis and psychiatry, media sociology, the anthropology of witnessing, and existential phenomenology.

We will focus on specific hermeneutic problems surfacing in audio-visual Holocaust testimonies: How are we to interpret manifestations of the absent within the re-presented? Trying to clarify how meaning can be aligned with silences, halts and stutters, ‘blank spaces’ in disrupted speech, bewildered looks and gestures, our aim is not only to explore the contents of these accounts, but also to reflect upon the role of the medium used to convey them (video interviews combining narrative and image).

An investigation of these very complex sources is vital when we address such questions as: What do these witness accounts show concerning the problem of articulating and coping with a traumatic, nearly unbearable past? How may interlocutors respond to Holocaust testimonies in a manner that minimizes the risk of re-traumatization? And, last but not least, how can compassionate listeners guard themselves against secondary traumatization?

Topic

“De gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum,” was a maxim of scholastic philosophy, stating that matters of taste can’t be rationally solved. But we are talking endlessly about matters of taste and find no trouble disputing our aesthetic judgments. This might be a hint that taste is not one single and simple thing. And indeed all matters of taste are located within a vast spectrum of possibilities: On one end of this spectrum we find divergent, subjective attitudes and evaluations which seem to be irreconcilable between the involved subjects, and on the other end there are qualities, like the sweetness of sugar, which we tend to see as properties of the tasted objects.

In this years summer school we want to approach the conceptual and cognitive problems surrounding the phenomenon of taste from a philosophical and neuroscientifical perspective. Our goal is to learn about the concept of taste, the neurological process involved in tasting, and the external factors which modulate them.

Hubert Preissl is head of the metabolic neuroimaging group at the Institute for Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases of the Helmholtz Center Munich at the University of TĂźbingen. He is interested in sensory and psychological factors influencing food choices.

Prof. Dr. Edmund Rolls, Oxford/Warwick

Edmund Rolls is a psychologist and neuroscientist at Oxford’s Centre for Computational Neuroscience as well as a honorary fellow at the University of Warwick. His research interests include the processing of taste and olfactory information by the brain.

Prof. Dr. Barry Smith, London

Barry Smith is director of the Institute of Philosophy at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of London and founder of the Centre for the Study of the Senses. He works on the philosophy of taste and smell.

Prof. Dr. Charles Spence, Oxford

Charles Spence is the head of the Crossmodal Research Laboratory at Oxford, he is interested in rich multisensory experiences such as smell, taste, sight, hearing, and touch.

Dr. Maartje Spetter, TĂźbingen

Maartje Spetter is a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Medical Psychology and Behavioural Neurobiology and the fMEG Centre at the University of TĂźbingen. She is interested in the neural circuits of taste, smell, and flavour preferences and its effect on food choice and therefore feeding behaviour

Postgraduate studies extend over a four year period. The invited PhD student will hold an employment as a
PhD candidate for four years full-time (starting salary currently 24,400 SEK/month).

The position is a proper employment the holder of which qualifies for the standard Swedish social benefits, such as paid parental leave. Doctoral students are expected to engage in their studies full-time, and to participate in the activities of their department. The position might also entail teaching and other assignments, amounting to no more than 20% of a full time employment. The positions are available from 2015-09-01.

In being inter-generationally transmitted, the “haunting legacy“ of the Holocaust (Gabriele Schwab) turns from first-hand to second-hand memory. The connection to the past is then mediated e.g. by written testimonies and stories, photography and film, monuments and architecture, behaviours and gestures. Once the last eyewitnesses will have passed away, knowledge about past events will no longer be based on personal experience but can only be re-collected by means of imaginative investment. Then local, regional and transnational cultures of memory will live on nothing but “postmemory” (Marianne Hirsch). How can one then avoid oblivion, re-present the past, and protect and appropriate others‘ dear-bought insights?

Children of Holocaust-survivors have described the second generation as the hinge generation: “The guardianship of the Holocaust is passed on to us.“ (Eva Hoffmann) However, the third, fourth, and coming generations, too, carry responsibility for how this historical heritage is received and handed down.

The workshop & PhD course “Aesthetics of Memory“ addresses fundamental questions that concern all countries, societies and individuals that have in one way or another been part of a murderous past and/or struggle with its aftermath: How can processes of commemoration be stimulated, indifference turned into attention and traumatic memories worked through? Which strategies of expression, re-presentation and communication have proved particularly successful in evoking critical reflection? By what means do they speak to the senses and the intellect, touch people emotionally and open up new imaginary spaces?

In an interdisciplinary meeting of art history and theory, philosophy and theology, the possibilities and limitations of memorial objects and landscapes will be explored. Moreover, the interplay between words and images, the use of synesthetic techniques and the creation of time-interfaces will be examined. Last but not least, dialogical aesthetics and performative practices of placing viewers in interlocutory situations will come into focus.

The Course
MRes Art: Theory and Philosophy promotes dialogue amongst practitioners and theorists about art discourse today. Highly relevant for both artists and writers, the course theorises art from a contemporary perspective embracing ideas in Continental philosophy, the Marxist intellectual tradition, as well as psychoanalytic and feminist theories.
