Abstract
The central aim of this contribution is to portray Kant鈥檚 notion of聽鈥淲itz鈥 as it unfolds from his Lectures on Anthropology, in a decisive聽stage of his intellectual evolution (1772-1796). This aim is sub-divided聽into two parallel objectives: first, to sketch a brief history of the聽concept of 鈥淲itz鈥, thus showing how the 鈥淲itz鈥 came to evolve from聽having a rational connotation to having an imaginative connotation, and聽how it came to be a pregnant philosophical issue, as well as an聽aesthetic principle. Secondly, to show how Kant read that singular聽course in the evolution of the 鈥淲itz鈥; how, in his view, 鈥淲itz鈥 and聽power of judgment, imagination and intellectuality are indeed opposed,聽but also how there is a necessity to unite both opposing parts; a聽convergence which is not only advantageous for both parts, but serves a聽greater purpose: the one of an harmonious balance between inferior and聽superior faculties of the spirit, and thus between imagination and
understanding, even philosophy and poetry.
