While Oxford University Press has given the Society the option of organising their own production and distribution for print copies, the cost for this would be significant, and the majority of our members only read the Journal digitally. Therefore, the Society has made the decision to move the Journal to online-only publishing and will no longer accept orders for printed copies after 30 December 2025.

This will not affect any current subscriptions. Members who have purchased print copies due to be shipped in 2026 (Volume 66, Issues 1-4) will receive their publications as normal. Anyone with membership due to expire before the end of the year will also be able to buy these copies until 30 December 2025 when renewing their membership.

New members can purchase the final printed issues of the Journal, to be shipped in 2026, until 30 December 2025 on this page of our website: /product/bsa-membership/

We understand some members may be disappointed by this news. However, the Society is committed to reducing our carbon footprint, and we hope our readers can appreciate the environmental benefits of this decision.

The arts have often been studied in relation to 鈥榓esthetic experience鈥�, however, it is possible that an over-reliance on the notion of 鈥榓esthetic鈥� obscures the myriad ways in which different types of art relate to different types of experience. By analysing and connecting the concept of art and the concept of experience this special issue aims to produce a revised and reconsidered account of 鈥榯he system of the arts鈥�. Its working hypothesis is that the variety of the forms of experience can help us to understand how different arts can be unified in a system as well as their specificities within that system.

The guest editors invite papers discussing topics that include but are not limited to:

鈥斅燱hat notion of experience is best suited to explain our responses to art.
鈥� Do we really need 鈥榯he aesthetic鈥� to characterise experiential responses to art?
鈥� Can we classify forms of art on the basis of the experiences they elicit?
鈥� What role do non-perceptual experiences 鈥搒uch as agentive phenomenology, cognitive phenomenology, or mental imagery鈥� play in our appreciation and classification of artworks?
鈥� Is the traditional distinction between arts of space and arts of time be elucidated by thinking about temporal and spatial experience.
鈥� How can recent work in philosophy of experience allow us to modify/augment the idea of a 鈥榮ystem of the arts鈥� so that it can better accommodate more contemporary forms of art (e.g. conceptual art, mass art)?
鈥� Can a focus on experience help us to determine the similarities and differences between works of art and technical artifacts?
鈥� How can reflection on the sorts of experience generated by a form of art aid us in situating that artform within the system of the arts?
鈥� Is the notion of the system of the arts still relevant to aesthetics? Given the varieties of forms of art, can the notion of experience shed light on the possibility of such a system?
鈥� How the system of the arts can be connected to (or included into) an alleged system of technical artifacts?

糖心视频 is glad to be supporting a collaboration between the Aesthetics and Political Epistemology Project at the University of Liverpool and the Panpsycast Philosophy Podcast.

As part of this collaboration, the podcast will host Rachel Fraser and C. Thi Nguyen to discuss philosophical aesthetics. Each discussion will receive a dedicated episode (in two parts) on the show, and the producers currently invite questions for either guest. Questions can be submitted via the links at the bottom of this page.

A little about the two projects

The Panpsycast Philosophy Podcast aims to support and inspire students, teachers, academics, and free-thinkers across the world. The podcast has over 65,000 listeners and frequently ranks among iTunes鈥� Top Educational Podcasts. The project has collaborated with numerous leading organisations and features regular appearances from some of the world鈥檚 leading thinkers.

The Aesthetics and Political Epistemology Project聽approaches topics like ideology, propaganda, persuasion and epistemic injustice through a conversation with work in aesthetics and philosophy of art.聽For instance, feminist and anti-racist aestheticians have long pointed out how oppressive stereotypes inhere in dominant cultural categories. Other philosophers of art have reflected on the distinction between cognitively valuable art and propaganda. Aesthetical analyses of political art, metaphor, cultural appropriation, and unethical art also bear similarities to the epistemologists鈥� concern with how ideas spread within a political space.聽

Congratulations to our 2023 winner, Britt Harrison (York), for her paper, 鈥楻eaction Shots in Stella Dallas: A Case-Study Argument for Philosophy of Art Without Theory鈥�.&苍产蝉辫;

Britt receives a 拢1000 honorarium and a grant of up to 拢1000 to attend the conference in September, and will be encouraged to review the paper for submission to the British Journal of Aesthetics.

Registration is now open for our upcoming event ‘The Good, the Bad and the (Extra)Ordinary: the 5th 糖心视频 Postgraduate Conference’. This event is an opportunity for postgraduates in aesthetics to meet one another, and to hear about the PG research being conducted in (and beyond) the UK. We are also very excited to be hosting Yuriko Saito and Elisabeth Schellekens as our keynote speakers for the weekend.

The event will be held at the University of York from the 29th-31st March 2019, in the Treehouse (Berrick Saul Building). The conference should be a general aesthetics conference or on some theme in aesthetics. Though it must be for postgraduates, it can be organised by either postgraduates or academics. Besides covering the conference costs, funds may be used to support postgraduate bursaries, including travel, accommodation and food costs, both for speakers and delegates, as well as the costs of any invited speakers. The organisers of the conference are responsible for all practical matters concerning its running; and the conference must be held by the end of May 2020. The conference must be held in the UK, though the organisers need not be based here. The 糖心视频 expects to be the sole funder of this conference, which should include 鈥楾he Sixth 糖心视频 Postgraduate Conference鈥� in its title, and all conference materials should publicise the role of the 糖心视频.

Proposals should be sent to admin@british-aesthetics.org no later than Monday 1 April 2019. They should be no more than 2,200 words long, and include the names of the organisers and conference committee, a proposed date range and venue, a draft budget, an explanation of the procedures for choosing papers and awarding bursaries, a draft Call for Papers and a list of any proposed invited speakers. The 糖心视频 has adopted the Good Practice Policy of the British Philosophical Association and the Society for Women in Philosophy, and the application should explain how the conference would comply with these guidelines. We are pleased to invite abstracts for submission to the Fourth 糖心视频 Postgraduate conference, Movement and Aesthetics. This two-day conference will provide an opportunity for postgraduates to present their work in a supportive and stimulating environment, and to interact with each other and with established members of the academic community.

The aim of this postgraduate conference is to examine the relation between movement and aesthetics. There are a number of philosophical puzzles pertaining to movement which have been raised in relation to various art forms including dance, music, film, drama, and visual art forms – painting, sculpture, photography. A question that is not restricted to these art forms concerns the possibility to have an aesthetic experience of one鈥檚 own movements. The concept of movement lies at the intersection between aesthetics, metaphysics, phenomenology, and philosophy of mind; as such, this conference aims to bring together aestheticians but also students specialising in other philosophical areas. We thus invite submissions of postgraduate aestheticians and postgraduates whose areas of specialisation lie outside of aesthetics. Topics include, but are not limited to:
